Medicare rebate information
Access to a psychologist may be covered under Medicare. You must be assessed by your doctor as having a mental health disorder or condition. Your doctor must then complete a Mental Health Care Plan and a referral letter before you can receive psychological services under Medicare. A psychiatrist can also provide a referral letter.
Without an appropriate referral you will be responsible for the full fee.
With an appropriate referral you can initially obtain up to six sessions under Medicare. Your doctor will then assess your progress, and may authorise further sessions. Generally you can access a maximum of 10 sessions per calendar year.
The Medicare rebate varies depending on the qualifications of the psychologist. Most clients who access psychological services under Medicare will be required to pay a gap fee of up to $43.00. However, our psychologists have the discretion to reduce the gap in the case of financial hardship, or to waive it altogether for people whose only income is a Centrelink pension or benefit.
Payment of the full account is normally required at the time of service (maximum fee is $169.50). For your convenience our practice has EFTPOS and Medicare Easyclaim facilities. With Medicare Easyclaim the Medicare rebate is paid into your savings or cheque account at the same time as you pay the consultation fee.
Return to Work SA (formerly known as Workcover)
Where your case manager has authorised psychological therapy, the entire fee will be met by Return to Work SA or self-insuring employers. However, you will be liable for any fee for non-attendance or late cancellation.
Non Medicare Services
Relationship and family counselling is not covered under Medicare. Fees for these services are $134.80 per hour. Health insurance rebates may apply.
Non-attendance and late cancellation fees
Your commitment to your therapy and attendance at appointments is very important. Cancellations within 48 hours of an appointment or non-attendance at appointments may attract fees of up to $66.00.
